FUTURE IN OUR HANDS MALAWI

FIOH, Malawi is involved in supporting prison education. This is done in Chichiri Prison one of the country's largest prisons (with 1800 inmates) located within the commercial city of Blantyre. FIOH Malawi supports the female and male inmates with their education by providing basic teaching and learning materials such as books pens, pencils, voluntary teachers as well as I.T. opportunities. We have also started a kindergarten, which is run by the prisoners for the babies who are born in prison. Children that are 4 years and under can stay with their mothers in Malawian prisons so long as the children have no one else to support them. Usually there are 6 or less children in the prison at a time.

FIOH Malawi promotes permaculture. This is done in the prison gardens where gardening promotes a more sustainable agriculture. We work with the wardens and some have undergone permaculture training after which a small dam was dug for irrigation farming.
FIOH Malawi supports early year's education in rural areas. This is done in Nsanje district .FIOH supports four pre-schools that are run by community members. Porridge is provided for the children as well as teaching and learning materials. All the schools had no shelter in which to learn. FIOH Malawi is in the process of building classrooms for the 4 schools. One classroom is close to completion now.
 
 
Environmental awareness, tree planting.
FIOH is supporting tree planting in Blantyre where FIOH are based and in Nsanje an area which
was is one of the worst areas in Malawi for deforestation.
