FIOH Pakistan,
with limited financial resources, has collected blankets and
clothing to distribute to the victims of the earthquake that
occured on 8th October 2005. At the beginning of November 2005
the death toll was estimated at over 73,000.
With a small
grant from the FIOH Fund UK, FIOH Pakistan has carried out a
survey and feasibility study in the area affected with a view
to providing longer term help to the victims in 3 or 4 villages
by supplying goats, tree and vegetable seeds.
The pictures

in Karachi.
FIOH Pakistan
director, Dominic Stephen, reported that there was a dire
need for warm clothes, blankets and above all tents, which were
in short supply. Sadly, some of the remotest areas were still
out of reach of the government and organizations working there.
FIOH Pakistan should be concentrating on rehabilitation and
reconstruction if possible. People can be helped to rebuild
their lives after major catastrophies of this kind through activities
like kitchen gardening, provision of seeds for sowing to start
off agricultural activities and giving technical assistance
on how the victims can rebuild their houses which can withstand
the shocks of future earthquakes. We want to activate our Lahore
partners
to organize their efforts and whatever resources they have to
take up small-scale activities in four to five small villages
in the affected areas.
