UPDATE
- DEC 2009
BACKGROUND
HEARTS is an organisation based in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, which
is working to help street children and poor tribal communities in
the rural areas.
During the past year the organisation has been building a home for
children in desperate situations through abuse, family deaths, poverty
and other circumstances. Many of the children are orphans as a result
of their parents deaths from AIDS, TB and cancer.
The aim of HEARTS
is to reunite runaway children back with their families but when this
is not possible the home will offer an education, accommodation and
basic amenities. Presently 40 boys and girls are resident but there
is room for up to 100.
HEARTS has also
been working with poor tribal people in the rural areas and has plans
to construct a rural health clinic. Regular medical camps have been
organised during the year and several creche centres have been started
to encourage children to be read and write. Education and health care
have been completely neglected by the parents. The people are desperately
poor and often they can only afford one meal a day.
