THE PAKISTAN EARTHQUAKE DISASTER 2005

More than 75,000 people were killed and many thousands were injured by the powerful earthquake that struck the Hindu Kush mountain range in Pakistan in early October 2005, sending shockwaves across south Asia and reducing cities and villages to rubble.
The earthquake measured 7.7 on the Richter scale. Approximately 3 million have been left homeless.
Villagers were working through the night, often with their bare hands, to clear the rubble of collapsed buildings as they struggled to save the victims of the disaster.

FIOH Fund partner, Participatory Village Development Programme has supplied 2000 blankets to help the victims and FIOH Pakistan plans to help on a long-term basis if the necessary funds can be obtained.

Children wait at Bagh, one of the most devastated towns in Azad Kashmir, to be evacuated to a safe place. Thousands remained without shelter, food and water in this remote mountainous region five days after the earthquake.
