HOW YOU CAN BECOME
INVOLVED

FIOH encourages people in the affluent society to adopt a way of life that is appropriately simple and also challenges the many injustices which cause poverty and the abuse of basic human and animal rights. This site will progressively include information intended to help people build up their own plan of action towards an ethical and just way of living in accordance with their awareness, understanding and willingness to change. An example to illustrate a typical plan of action is shown below:

I will -

1. Try to live more simply. I will not own a car and will not make long distance air flights for holidays. I will walk or use a bicycle for short distance travel and public transport for long distances.
2. Buy vegetables from local farmers markets. I will avoid the big supermarkets, like Asda-Walmart and Tesco, for example. I will support local small shops even if the prices are more.
3. Buy products with the Fair Trade mark whenever this option is available.
4. Grow a reasonable proportion of my own food, using organic methods.
5. Reduce my consumption and waste and recycle all that is possible to do so. I will compost all my raw vegetable waste from the kitchen.
6. Give a meaningful proportion of my ncome to help relieve poverty in poor countries - about £500 each year.
7. Campaign for changes in unjust social, political and economic systems and policies which are causing inequality and poverty.
8. Avoid the products of multinational companies, including Coca Cola and Macdonalds, for example.
9. Invest my money as ethically as possible by using the Co-operative Bank and the Ecology Building Society for my savings.
10. Assist with the formation of community currency systems.
11. Install water butts to collect rainwater.
12. Insulate my house well and install energy-saving lights and equipment.

Most action plans of this kind are likely to result in appreciable savings (even if these are only realised over a long period due to expenditure on expensive energy saving measures). FIOH encourages individuals to use those savings and part of their disposable incomes, to help reduce poverty.
