Be warned! If
you receive a call congratulating you on winning a fabulous prize
and asking you to press 9 for further details, DONT DO IT. These calls
can cost you £20 a minute. Even if you disconnect immediately,
it will remain connected for minimum of 5 minutes costing you about
£100. Another scam involves mobile phones; a missed call comes
up with a number beginning 0709 020. If you return one of these calls
you will be charged £50 a minute!. This type of scam is also
used in EMail - just delete them.
In general just
delete any EMail that suggests that you have the opportunity to acquire
a large sum of money (usually connected with the release of money
from an African Bank).
Also just put the phone down if you think someone is trying to gain
personal information about you in a telephone call. If someone calls
at your door asking you to take part in a survey of properties in
your area 'at no cost to you' and with a 'we are not trying to sell
you anything' you might reply with the comment 'What are you going
to pay me for my time in taking part in your survey?' and see how
fast they disappear!
If you receive
an EMail including words similar to those quoted below then just DELETE
IT. This is a common scam, usually from people alegedly from Africa:
"Upon
acceptance of this proposal, I shall send to you by mail the ASB Bank
"Next of Kin Payment Application Text Form" as well as detailed
information on how this deal would be carried out.
The money will
be shared in the ratio: Sixty percent for me, thirty percent for you
and ten percent for any arising contingencies during the Course of
this transaction. I guarantee that this will be executed under
legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of the
law, as I will use my position in the Bank's here to perfect this
business transaction & secure Approvals and guarantee the successful
execution of this transaction.
Please be informed
that your utmost confidentiality is required. If this interests you,
I want to remind you of the confidentiality of this Transaction at
hand whatever your decision is.
I await your
urgent response. Your detailed reply should contain your
telephone and fax numbers for easier communication for onward
proceeding".
